Mrs. Silva

“Teacher: /tiːtʃə/ noun, singular;
a person that facilitates learning.”

Teresa Silva

Co-founder of Silva Learning.

Throughout her professional career as a teacher, Teresa has developed a method to teach Mathematics that makes her students enjoy the subject and perform at their best.

Teresa’s professional path has been a prolific one and characterised by a heightened social awareness.

In Portugal, towards the end of the nineties, Teresa taught in an international private school for 18 years. She taught Mathematics to Secondary school students, different IB levels and the “Gifted and Talented” students. She is still a Senior examiner.

In England, where Teresa lived for 23 years, she was part of the committee that changed the Mathematics curriculum from “O” levels to GCSE. She was also senior examiner of Mathematics, taught intensive courses in different Mathematics topics in Oxford, Cambridge, and London Universities, as well as in Lyon University. Further to this, Teresa was Headteacher of a bilingual school (English/Portuguese), a pilot programme that was implemented in a London State School, and taught Mathematics at a private school, Knightsbridge school, in London.

Around 1975, Teresa was invited to work in the Ministry of Education of Angola, where she was part of the committee that established the new education policy, as well as the development of the Mathematics syllabi for all the learning levels. In addition, she was a senior Mathematics examiner. Teresa also worked voluntarily in the alphabetisation programme. For all this work, which spanned from 1975 to 1979, Teresa was awarded a commendation from the Angolan President.

Always a firm believer in Education, Teresa continues to teach and pass on her method to other teachers.

Having been a passionate reader all her life, Teresa has plenty of interests, such as History, Art, Music, Psychology, Sociology, Crafts, Self-development, amongst others.

More recently, Teresa’s last achievement has been to start SILVA Learning, where academic learning and music exist in symmetry and harmony.

Mr. Silva

“A few years into being a professional musician, I realised how important it was to teach music to children in a fun way, as this makes way for the emotional drive which, in turn, nurtures creativity.”

Nuno Silva

Co-founder of Silva Learning.

Born in Portugal, Nuno moved to the UK with his family when he was ten years old. Four years later, he started his musical journey. He completed a three-year drumming course with Joel Rothman and then a Latin American Percussion two-year course at Goldsmith’s College, London.

Nuno then enjoyed a profuse professional career, which started in the 80’s. He worked both in television musical shows and in concerts. He collaborated with the American choreographer, Charles Augins, for around 12 years, Paul Henry and Stewart Arnold, as well as with artists in TV shows such as the Red Dwarf, Streets Ahead, and Top of the Pops. Nuno also collaborated with Eddi Reader, Sarah Jane Morris, Melany Harold, Morris Morrison, James Danton, and bands such as Pet Shop Boys, Cayenne, Fufu, The Happy End Orchestra, and Jools Holland Orchestra.

After 17 years as a Londoner musician, Nuno returned to Portugal in 1997 with his family to work at an international school as a music teacher, where he still is.

Along his life, Nuno has always contributed as a charity raiser, which can be corroborated with his commendable charity project Teen Alive Aid, which exists for over a decade.

More recently, Nuno’s latest project was to start SILVA Learning, where academic learning and music exist in harmony and symmetry.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

Albert Einstein

Co-founder of Silva Learning.

During her professional path in the teaching system, Catarina had the opportunity to complete specific courses for young learners, such as Teaching Assistant Levels 2, 3, and 4, and EYFS Level 3, amongst others.

Catarina lived in London from the age of three months. She attended a convent school and studied Drama at North Westminster College London. When Catarina turned 20 years old, she moved to Portugal, where she has been working at an international school since then.

She is kind and firm, the right recipe for effective learning. A great empathy is created between Catarina and her young pupils.

Behind the dedication to her profession, there is a soul of a singer, a hobby that she has pursued all her life, as early as the age of six. Catarina has participated in various charity concerts.

Rita has always been passionate about language and the ability to communicate with one another.

Her professional paths focused predominantly on English and Portuguese language teaching, translation, and subtitling.

During her academic years, she graduated in Translation/Interpreting at ESTG-IPL, Leiria, and then completed a Master in Comparative Literature at UCL, London, writing a dissertation on the autobiographical genre of Livro do Desassossego and roland BARTHES par roland barthes and Fragments d’un Discours Amoureux. Additionally, she completed two teacher training courses, CELTA and CCP.

Professionally speaking, whilst being an on-going part-time freelance translator, Rita worked as an English teacher in different contexts: AECs programme, Language Centre (as a Second Language) and International Curriculum (English Language).

It is also worth mentioning that, halfway through Rita’s teaching career, she took on a different professional challenge, working at a private jet company, where English was the lingua franca. Even though it was an enriching experience, the teaching drive still remained very much alive and, after a while, she ended up returning to the teaching realms.
